Hyundai Wins 10 Design Awards — and the Top Prize Went to a Rickshaw

Two Gold, two Bronze, and six Finalist nods at the 2026 IDEA Awards — with the biggest wins going to an electric rickshaw duo and a restaurant book, not a car.

Hyundai picked up 10 awards at the 2026 International Design Excellence Awards — and the most telling detail is what won. The company's top honor in mobility went not to a passenger car but to the E3W and E4W, a pair of electric micro-mobility concepts that rethink India's motor rickshaw.

The haul breaks down as two Gold, two Bronze, and six Finalist recognitions, spanning concept design, branding, service design, and robotics. Last year Hyundai took eight honors at the same competition, led by more conventional entries like the IONIQ 9 and the Palisade.

The E3W (three wheels) and E4W (four) earned Gold in the Concepts & Speculative Design category. Both ride on a full-flat, barrier-free floor that allows step-free access and wheelchair use, with fold-and-dive seating that flips the cabin between passenger and cargo duty. Adjustable ride height is designed to keep the vehicles moving through flooded streets during monsoon season — a problem no American crossover has to solve.

The concepts first appeared at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi in January 2025, developed with Indian manufacturer TVS Motor. Under that partnership, Hyundai handles design and engineering while TVS would build and market the production version; the three-wheeler is the candidate for series production, and the E4W is still under evaluation, including for markets outside India.

The second Gold went to the Na Oh Korean Restaurant Book, an archive volume documenting the restaurant inside Hyundai's innovation center in Singapore, created with three-Michelin-star chef Corey Lee. Bronze awards went to RETRACE, the company's heritage magazine — this issue revisits the Stellar and Sonata sedans of the 1980s — and to the refreshed identity of Hope on Wheels, Hyundai's pediatric cancer program in the US.

The six Finalist entries include the Mobile Nap in-car sleep concept, the Furnished Lounge interior with its Add Gear mounting system, the MobED robot platform, Na Oh's brand spaces, a MagSafe employee ID card case, and UX Studio Seoul, an open UX research space.

IDEA, run by the Industrial Designers Society of America since 1980, uses a blind judging process, and Gold winners enter the permanent collection of The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Automakers are still a minority in the field: at the same 2026 edition, LG Electronics took 17 awards.

Design trophies don't move metal on their own. But the pattern here — rickshaws, robots, restaurant books — shows where Hyundai's design organization is spending its energy beyond the showroom, and the E3W is the one entry on this list with a real path to production.
