Polestar's Formula 2030 Concept Previews a New Polestar 2 — One the US Won't Get

Polestar has confirmed a concept car called Formula 2030, and the timing says as much as the teaser does. The show car previews the design of the next-generation Polestar 2, due in 2027, and the Polestar 7 compact SUV that follows in 2028 — the two models meant to carry the brand's turnaround, and neither of which is currently cleared for sale in the United States.

The Swedish EV maker released a single head-on image on Monday: a low, wide front end shot in near darkness, with the split Dual Blade headlight signature glowing on both sides and an illuminated logo on the hood. That is the entire visual record so far. Polestar has published no dimensions, no powertrain details, and no interior shots, and the release frames the car as a design statement rather than a technical one.

Evolution, not revolution

Formula 2030 is the first clean-sheet project under Philipp Römers, who joined Polestar in January 2025 and, according to Autocar, succeeded Maximilian Missoni, the head of design behind the current 2, 3, and 4. Römers's brief, in the company's own framing, is continuity: the concept keeps the Dual Blade lights and the Scandinavian form language and pushes exterior, interior, and materials forward from there.

"Polestar's design and brand is already so strong, it was obvious we needed a bold evolution not revolution of what came before," Römers said in the release.

The concept was shown behind closed doors to investors, retailers, and a group of VIP customers at The Cube, Polestar's Gothenburg headquarters, at what the company calls a Formula 2030 strategy event. The public debut comes "later this year" during the press launch of the Polestar 4 SUV. Autocar puts that in October; Polestar itself hasn't confirmed a date.

Why the US angle matters

For American readers, the important context arrived in June, not this week. On June 25, Polestar said the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security had declined to grant it authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule to sell vehicles in the US from model year 2027 onward. The company will sell through its existing stock of Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 and keep servicing customers, but it has said it will stop selling new vehicles in the country after that.

That puts the 2027 Polestar 2 — the first production car Formula 2030 previews — on the wrong side of the cutoff. Unless the rule changes or Polestar secures the authorization it was denied, the cars this concept leads to are for Europe, Asia Pacific, and markets like Canada, not the US. Polestar has been open about the pivot: Europe already accounts for close to 80 percent of its retail sales, and the Polestar 7 will be built there.

The commercial backdrop is uneven. Polestar reported a record 30,423 retail sales in the first half of 2026 and cut its operating loss by 43 percent year over year, to $629 million, in results published September 3. The same report trimmed 2026 volume guidance to low-to-mid single-digit growth from low double digits, citing US regulatory headwinds and a current Polestar 2 that is, in the company's words, approaching the end of its lifecycle.

That is the gap Formula 2030 is meant to bridge. The Polestar 4 SUV, priced from €57,900 in Europe and now in production in Busan, South Korea, covers the near term; the concept is the brand's argument that the 2027 and 2028 cars will still look like Polestars rather than a reset.

What's still unknown

Polestar hasn't said when or where the full concept will be shown, what platform the next Polestar 2 will use, or whether any version of it could return to the US market. The company also hasn't given a launch date for the 2027 car beyond the year. Expect the complete concept, and presumably more than one photo, once the Polestar 4 SUV media drive gets under way.
