Ram Prices the New ProMaster City at $39,995, and It Will Have the Segment to Itself
Ram hit the sub-$40,000 target it set in March with five dollars to spare. When the Turkish-built van lands in Q1 2027, no other midsize commercial van will be on sale in the US.
Ram has put a price on the reborn ProMaster City: $39,995 including a $2,595 destination charge, which the company calls the lowest MSRP in the commercial-van segment. When it reaches dealers in the first quarter of 2027, it will also be, by Ram's own account, the only midsize commercial van on sale in the US.
The number lands exactly where Ram promised. At the van's reveal at Work Truck Week in March, the company committed to a starting price under $40,000, and it cleared the bar by five dollars. The base Tradesman Cargo lists at $37,400 before destination; the SLT Cargo adds $1,500, and the Passenger Wagon versions, with seating for five or an optional eight, run $40,100 and $41,600 plus destination.
What $40K buys
The new ProMaster City is a much bigger vehicle than the original that left the US after 2022 — Automotive Fleet puts the new cargo van at roughly 22 inches longer than its predecessor. It uses a proven Stellantis commercial platform that Ram says has covered billions of miles and sold more than 1.5 million units globally, powered by a 1.6-liter turbo four with 166 hp and 221 lb-ft driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic.
The load numbers are the sales pitch: over 167 cubic feet of cargo volume, a 111-inch load floor that swallows 4x8 sheet goods flat, more than 48 inches between the wheel wells, over 2,000 pounds of payload, and a targeted 2,000 pounds of towing with the available Class 3 hitch. At under 80 inches tall, Ram says it's the only Class 2 commercial van that fits most urban parking garages. Buyers choose from eleven window-and-door configurations, including a rear liftgate Ram calls segment-exclusive.
Standard equipment is unusually rich for a work van: a 10-inch digital cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital rearview mirror, heated front seats, and automatic emergency braking. The SLT adds front parking sensors, a wireless charger, a heated steering wheel, fog lamps and 17-inch alloys.
A segment of one
Ram's confidence comes from arithmetic. The compact and midsize van field emptied out over the past few years as rivals left the segment, and Ram estimates nearly a million small and midsize vans have been sold in the US since 2009, more than half of them still on the road. Those aging vans need replacing, and at the moment nothing else directly fills the slot.
"When we unveiled the all-new ProMaster City earlier this year, we made a commitment to deliver a starting price below $40,000 because we know the cost of acquisition matters," said Ram CEO Matt VanDyke.
One detail worth noting: the van is built at the Tofas plant in Bursa, Turkey, with upfitting at Stellantis' Baltimore Transformation Center, which means it's subject to the 25 percent "chicken tax" on imported light trucks. Ram said in March it plans to absorb that tariff, and the sub-$40K sticker suggests it has. Orders are open in the second half of 2026, with production starting this year.
