Hyundai Ioniq 6 N Wins in Germany — and It's the Only Ioniq 6 Left in America

The 601-hp electric sedan beat the field in GCOTY's Performance class months after its World Performance Car win. American buyers, though, will have a hard time finding one.

Hyundai's Ioniq 6 N has won the Performance class at the 2027 German Car of the Year awards, its second major trophy this year. In the US, the electric sport sedan carries extra weight: it's now the only Ioniq 6 Hyundai sells here.

The GCOTY jury of motoring journalists picked the Ioniq 6 N after its round of comparison drives, citing its pace, precise handling, and driver-focused setup, Hyundai says. Earlier this year, the car was named World Performance Car.

An all-electric shortlist

Performance is one of five main classes. The other winners were the Volkswagen ID. Polo (Budget), Kia PV5 (Compact), the electric Mercedes-Benz GLC (Premium), and Xpeng X9 (Luxury). All five are battery-electric, so the overall German Car of the Year, due to be named on November 2, will be an EV regardless of the outcome.

This year the jury also added cross-class awards. The Porsche 911 Turbo S took Powertrain of the Year, the BMW iX3 won for interior design, and the Renault Twingo won for exterior design, according to GCOTY.

Hyundai has done well at these awards before. The Ioniq 5 took the overall title in 2022, the Ioniq 6 won the New Energy class in 2024, and the Ioniq 9 won Premium in 2026.

What the jury drove

The sedan is closely related to the Ioniq 5 N and uses the same dual-motor layout and 84-kWh battery. It makes 601 hp (448 kW) as standard. Pressing the N Grin Boost button raises that to 641 hp (478 kW) for 10 seconds. With launch control, Hyundai quotes 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, and top speed is 160 mph.

Much of the N hardware is there to keep the driver involved. N e-Shift uses motor torque to mimic gear changes, N Active Sound+ adds three synthetic sound modes, and N Drift Optimizer lets owners tune slides on a closed course.

In Germany, the Ioniq 6 N has been on sale since March from €75,900. It's rated at 487 km (303 miles) on the WLTP cycle, and the EPA figure will likely come in lower.

A rare sight in the US

American buyers will have a harder time getting one. In March, Hyundai dropped the standard Ioniq 6 from its US lineup, leaving the N as the nameplate's sole version. Hyundai didn't give a reason. The sedan is imported from South Korea, while the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 are built in Georgia. US Ioniq 6 sales also slipped to about 10,000 units in 2025.

Hyundai USA says the Ioniq 6 N will reach select dealers in "extremely limited" numbers. The company hasn't published US pricing or EPA range yet.
