Chery's Brands Just Outsold VW in Britain — Now Its Premium Lepas Line Lands in Europe
Pre-orders for the L8 plug-in hybrid are open in the UK, Italy, and Spain, with first deliveries due this fall — weeks after Chery's combined brands out-registered Volkswagen in Britain.

Chery's newest brand has reached the order books. Lepas, the fourth marque the Chinese giant has pointed at Western buyers, is taking pre-orders for its L8 plug-in hybrid SUV in the UK, Italy, Spain, and other European markets, with the first customer deliveries scheduled between September and October.
The timing is convenient. In August, Chery's three established UK brands — Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo — registered more than 8,600 cars between them, enough to beat Volkswagen, Britain's best-selling individual brand that month with 7,626 registrations, according to SMMT data. Chery presents this as a Chinese automaker leading the UK sales chart for the first time, though the math stacks a three-brand group against single nameplates.
What the L8 actually is
The L8 is a five-seat, roughly 15.4-foot (4.7-meter) family SUV built on the same platform as the three-row Chery Tiggo 9. Its Super Hybrid powertrain pairs a 1.5-liter turbo four with an electric motor and an 18.4-kWh battery, which is enough for 56 miles (90 km) of electric running on the WLTP cycle and about 745 miles (1,200 km) combined. Unusually for a plug-in hybrid, the pack supports DC fast charging at up to 40 kW, going from 30 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes.
In the UK, where orders opened in July, the L8 costs £34,900 in Essence trim and £37,900 as the Elevate — more than £8,000 below a comparable Volkswagen Tiguan plug-in hybrid, per Carwow. The design does little to hide where Lepas is aiming: Autocar's first drive noted the rear end is unmistakably Cayenne-flavored, and the script badging carries a distinct Stuttgart accent.
Riding a hot streak
Chery has momentum to spend. The company says it has now shipped more than 7 million vehicles abroad in total, a first for a Chinese automaker — and it only delivered its first cars in Britain in September 2025. Lepas itself made its European debut at Milan Design Week in April, and the awards are already stacking up: the smaller L6 took the interior design prize in the city-car category at the Turin Auto Show, while the L4 EV picked up a long-range electric SUV award in Indonesia. Chery adds that the L8 PHEV and L6 EV have been shortlisted for the 2027 World Car awards, though the official candidate list hasn't been published yet.

Dealer agreements are signed in Italy, Spain, and Romania, brand stores are opening worldwide, and an all-electric L8 is due in 2027. The US is nowhere on this map — Lepas's footprint runs through Europe and Southeast Asia, where deliveries of the L6 and L4 are already underway. For American buyers this remains a spectator sport, but the price pressure Lepas is putting on Volkswagen and Toyota in Europe is exactly the playbook Chinese brands would bring here if the door ever opened.
