Lucid Delivered More Cars Than It Built in Q3 — and That Was the Plan
Lucid built just 2,954 cars after dropping a shift in Arizona, filling the gap from inventory. It's the visible part of a $1.4 billion cash plan, and there's more stock left to clear

Lucid handed 3,806 vehicles to customers in the third quarter but built only 2,954. That is the first time this year its output has fallen below deliveries, and the 852-car gap was intentional: Lucid is selling cars it already built instead of making new ones, as part of a cash-saving reset announced in August.
On paper, it looks like a step back. Deliveries slipped about 4% from 3,953 in the second quarter and 6.7% from 4,078 a year earlier. Production fell much harder, down 38% from Q2 and 24% year over year. For scale, Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles in the same quarter, roughly five times Lucid's total.
Why Lucid is building less
The production drop follows Lucid's move in June to run its AMP-1 plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, on one shift instead of two. On the second-quarter earnings call, CEO Silvio Napoli, who took over in June, said building cars faster than Lucid could deliver them was eating cash and inflating inventory. He also told investors that output in the third and fourth quarters would stay below second-quarter levels.

AMP-1 builds both the Air sedan and the Gravity SUV. Lucid says Gravity demand is regaining momentum, but it doesn't report deliveries by model, so that claim can't be checked against numbers yet. The SUV had a rough start to 2026: a supplier problem with its second-row seats halted Gravity deliveries for 29 days in the first quarter.
How much inventory is left
The reset targets $1.4 billion in cash-flow improvements this year. According to CNBC, $600 million to $800 million of that is expected to come from vehicle inventory, with about $500 million from lower capital spending and $200 million from operating costs.
The third quarter shows how much ground remains. By our math, Lucid built 13,228 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026 and delivered 10,852, a gap of 2,376. The first half alone produced 3,228 more cars than it delivered, so the Q3 drawdown unwound only about a quarter of that buildup.
That isn't a precise inventory count. Since January, Lucid's production totals have included vehicles built in Arizona for shipment to Saudi Arabia, so some of the gap reflects cars bound for that market rather than unsold stock.

The numbers also show how far the plan has shifted. In February, Lucid guided for 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles in 2026. Through September it has built just over half of the low end, and it no longer gives a full-year forecast, according to WardsAuto. Guidance for 2027 is due with year-end results.
What's next
The reset also delayed Lucid's lower-priced Midsize models, now set to scale up in the second half of 2027, with production starting at the AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia. That platform also underpins Lucid's 25,000-robotaxi deal with Bolt in Europe.
Lucid will report full third-quarter results on November 9, with a call at 5:30 p.m. ET. Revenue, cash burn, and the inventory line on the balance sheet will show whether selling down stock is producing the cash the reset promised, and how low fourth-quarter production goes. The company hasn't said how many cars it still has in stock.
