Mazda Kills the CX-70: 2027 CX-90 Adds Two-Row Trims From $46,880

Two Premium Sport trims drop the third row and replace the CX-70, but the cheapest two-row CX-90 costs $4,130 more than the CX-70 did, and there is no two-row PHEV.

Mazda is ending the CX-70 after two model years. The 2027 CX-90, priced on October 27, gains two-row versions that the company says will take the CX-70's place in the U.S. lineup, and they start at $46,880 before the $1,645 destination charge.

That is the second Mazda crossover to get 2027 pricing this week, following the 2027 CX-5 lineup. The CX-90 news is the bigger shift: the CX-70 shared the CX-90's platform and powertrains and differed mainly in seat count and trim, and Mazda has now folded it back into the model it came from.

Two rows, two trims

The two-row CX-90 is limited to the mid-pack Premium Sport grades. The 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport costs $46,880 as a two-row and $48,080 as a three-row; the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport is $53,540 and $54,740. In both cases dropping the third row saves $1,200 and adds one-touch power-folding second-row seats. Two exterior colors, Melting Copper Metallic and Zircon Sand Metallic, are reserved for the two-row cars.

Everything else in the nine-trim lineup is three-row only. The base 3.3 Turbo Select is $39,700, which is $400 more than the 2026 car after Mazda's May price adjustment took it to $39,300. Turbo Preferred is $43,850 and Turbo Premium Plus is $50,670. The PHEV runs $50,695 for Preferred, $55,500 for Premium Sport, and $58,700 for Premium Plus, while the Turbo S Premium Plus tops the range at $57,970. Add $1,645 for destination ($1,690 in Alaska), which puts the cheapest CX-90 at $41,345 and the cheapest two-row at $48,525 on the road.

What a CX-70 buyer gives up

The comparison that matters is with the car being replaced. The 2026 CX-70, per Mazda's own pricing table, started at $42,750 for the 3.3 Turbo Preferred. The cheapest two-row CX-90 is $4,130 above that, because Mazda has not offered the two-row body on the Select or Preferred grades. At the top end the gap nearly disappears: the CX-70 3.3 Turbo S Premium was $53,440, and the two-row CX-90 Turbo S Premium Sport is $100 more.

The plug-in hybrid is the bigger loss. The CX-70 PHEV SC was the cheapest way into Mazda's 323-hp plug-in powertrain at $44,450. There is no two-row CX-90 PHEV at all, so the entry point for that drivetrain is now the three-row PHEV Preferred at $50,695, up $6,245. Mazda quotes up to 27 miles of electric range for the 2027 CX-90 PHEV against 30 EPA-rated miles for the 2026 CX-70 PHEV; official 2027 EPA figures have not been published yet.

Neither model was having a strong year. Through September, Mazda's own sales reporting had the CX-70 down 21.0 percent and the CX-90 down 21.7 percent, as we noted in our breakdown of Mazda's September results. Folding the two into one nameplate removes a model that was splitting an already shrinking pool of large-crossover buyers. For anyone weighing the outgoing car, the CX-70 now belongs in the "disappearing" column of our 2026-versus-2027 buying guide.

What else changes for 2027

The powertrains carry over: the 3.3-liter turbo inline-six makes 280 hp and 332 lb-ft on 87 octane, the Turbo S makes 340 hp and 369 lb-ft on 91 (319 hp on regular), and the PHEV pairs a 2.5-liter four with a 17.8-kWh battery for 323 hp. All versions get a revised rear suspension crossmember and new rear bushings, which Mazda says improve ride comfort, and the PHEV's drive motor gains external insulation for quieter low-speed running. The Preferred trim picks up roof rails, the 12.3-inch center display, wireless charging, and two more USB-C ports in the third row, and Mazda has reshuffled Alexa Built-In and Online Navigation across the upper grades. Turbo S models are rated to tow 5,000 pounds with the Mazda Genuine towing kit and a new Towing drive mode.

Mazda has not said when the 2027 CX-90 reaches dealers, and it has not announced an end date for CX-70 production or how much 2026 CX-70 stock remains. The full trim breakdown is in Mazda's pricing release.
