BMW’s Concept 7 Protection Is an Armored 7 Series You Can’t Spot

The plug-in hybrid concept is rated against 9 mm and .44 Magnum rounds, sits below BMW’s VR9 flagship, and isn’t confirmed for production.

BMW has built an armored 7 Series meant to pass for an ordinary one. The Concept 7 Protection, shown October 12, tucks ballistic steel and composite panels inside a body that looks like the standard sedan, and it is rated to stop handgun rounds, not rifle fire or explosives.

That makes it a new bottom rung in BMW's factory-armored range, below the 7 Series Protection and the X5 Protection VR6. It is also a regional project for now: BMW says the initial focus is on selected European markets, another case of automakers keeping some of their most interesting hardware to specific regions.

What the armor stops, and what it doesn't

According to BMW's announcement, the concept meets a new standard called BayB, covering "selected, particularly common handgun ammunition, such as 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum." The company doesn't explain who issues BayB or how it lines up with the VR1-to-VR10 scale from VPAM, the German association of test labs, that rates its other protection vehicles.

Blast protection is not included. BMW says customers who need it should move up to a higher protection level.

The hardware is spread around the cabin. The glass is substantially thicker than the production car's, the doors carry ballistic steel and fiber-reinforced composites that overlap where door, glass, and body meet, and the bulkhead and rear wall are armored too.

The roof is the clever part. A steel-and-composite layer sits beneath the standard panoramic glass roof, so the car looks stock from outside. The trade-off is that the sunblind stays permanently closed.

There are other giveaways from the inside. The side windows still power down, but not all the way, and an intercom lets occupants talk to people outside with the doors and windows shut. An attack alarm adds visual and audible alerts.

A long way below the VR9 car

BMW's existing 7 Series Protection is a different kind of machine. Rated VR9, with VPAM 10 coverage optional, it is built in Dingolfing, Germany, around a dedicated armor-steel body structure and is certified against both firearms and explosives. BMW has said its roof and underbody armor is designed to withstand drone-carried charges and grenade fragments. The X5 Protection VR6, assembled in Spartanburg, South Carolina, fills the middle.

The main rival sits at the top end as well. Mercedes-Benz launched the V12-powered S 680 Guard 4Matic in 2021 with a VR10 rating and a starting price of €457,100 in Germany, Autocar reported at the time. The regular S-Class, the 7 Series' closest competitor, is on a run of its own: U.S. S-Class sales rose 47% in the third quarter.

BMW is pitching the concept at private and corporate customers who want protection matched to a lower risk profile without advertising it.

The powertrain, and the unknowns

Underneath is the plug-in hybrid hardware of the M760e xDrive: a 3.0-liter inline-six, an electric motor inside the eight-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive. In the production M760e that system makes 603 hp (450 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.

BMW quotes no output, performance, or weight figures for the armored concept. It says only that the chassis, brakes, drivetrain, and driver-assistance systems were recalibrated for the added protection.

The company also hasn't committed to building it. BMW describes the car as a look at a "potential expansion" of its protection lineup, and it has given no price or timing.

One piece is confirmed. The concept debuts a BMW Individual rear console with a fold-down table, a wireless charging tray, and a cool box, and BMW says it will be offered on the 7 Series in the second half of 2027. The facelifted sedan itself was revealed in April, five months before the redesigned 2027 BMW 3 Series.
