Nissan's Frontier Ronin Concept Gets GT-R NISMO Turbos and 14 Inches of Travel

The Ronin pairs a twin-turbo V6 with Titan suspension and 35-inch tires, alongside a 40th-anniversary Pathfinder and a safari-style Armada. None is for sale.

The wildest idea on Nissan's SEMA Show stand is a Frontier pickup running a twin-turbocharged V6 with turbochargers borrowed from the GT-R NISMO. The Frontier Ronin concept shares the space with a 1980s-themed Pathfinder XE-V6 and a roofless Armada Jungle Patrol, and Nissan says none of the three will be sold.

The trucks join the Sentra Spec-V concept Nissan showed last week at booth 21521 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, where the show runs Nov. 3–6. Nissan positions the builds as a preview of how it wants to accessorize future trucks and SUVs.

Frontier Ronin: GT-R turbos, Titan suspension

Nissan hasn't said how much power the Ronin makes. Its build sheet does spell out the hardware: the Frontier's 3.8-liter V6 gets a custom rear-mounted twin-turbo system from the R35 GT-R NISMO, a front-mount intercooler, EcuTek engine management, and a NISMO Off Road exhaust with 3-inch cutouts. In stock form, that V6 is rated at 310 hp and 281 lb-ft.

The chassis changes go just as deep. Modified Titan suspension parts and a rear axle swap widen the track by 12 inches and lift the truck 4 inches, while Bilstein Black Hawk coilovers and CJD Racing long-travel components deliver 14 inches of wheel travel. The Ronin rolls on 35-inch Yokohama Geolandar X-AT tires and prototype 17-inch NISMO Ascend beadlock wheels, with six-piston front brakes behind them.

Nissan calls the Ronin its vision for a high-performance off-road truck and makes no direct comparison. The obvious yardstick is the Ford Ranger Raptor, whose twin-turbo V6 makes 405 hp on 33-inch tires, according to Car and Driver. The Ronin's tires are 2 inches taller, and today's Frontier has nothing like it in the lineup; the PRO-4X is the most off-road-focused trim, as our midsize pickup buying guide lays out.

Pathfinder XE-V6 and Armada Jungle Patrol

The Pathfinder XE-V6 marks the nameplate's 40th anniversary. Its red paint with black, charcoal, and silver stripes and its retro badging point back to the first-generation WD21 model, which offered a 3.0-liter V6 and was named a 4x4 of the Year in 1987.

Underneath is a 2027 Pathfinder Rock Creek with its 295-hp V6 (the regular Pathfinder makes 284 hp). Nissan added a 4-inch lift, 18-inch prototype NISMO wheels on 285/75R18 mud-terrain tires, high-clearance bumpers, a Warn winch, and a swing-out carrier for a full-size spare. If you are shopping the stock version, see how the Pathfinder compares with the Kia Sorento.

The Armada Jungle Patrol is the most radical of the three. The roof is gone, a tubular roll cage takes its place, and the rear bench seats face inward, safari style. The 425-hp 3.5-liter V6 gets only a prototype NISMO exhaust, but the chassis gets a wider track, long-travel suspension with bypass coilovers, 37-inch Yokohama Geolandar M/T tires on 18-inch NISMO beadlocks, and tubular steel bumpers.

What reaches showrooms

Nissan says the concepts aren't headed for production, but its SEMA builds have shaped real trims before: the company credits earlier show cars for the Rock Creek versions of the Rogue, Kicks, and Pathfinder. Some of the Nissan and NISMO parts on these trucks may be sold through dealers, though Nissan hasn't said which. That fits a broader pattern of automakers using SEMA to sell their own accessories.

The release also mentions the Xterra. Kim Less, Nissan Americas' vice president of aftersales and customer loyalty, tied the concepts to future models "including an all-new Xterra," but gave no timing. Motor1 reported in October 2025 that Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier had pointed to a 2028 return for the Xterra as a V6 hybrid built in Canton, Mississippi. Nissan hasn't updated that schedule.
