Pathfinder vs. Sorento: V6 and Eight Seats, or a 37-mpg Hybrid and a 10-Year Warranty?

Nissan's V6 Pathfinder and Kia's Sorento now start within $1,000 of each other at $40,000. We ran the fuel, warranty, and towing math to see which family wins.

Nissan and Kia priced their 2027 three-row SUVs within three weeks of each other, and the stickers land almost on top of one another. The 2027 Nissan Pathfinder starts at $39,990 and reaches dealers in November with a V6 and no hybrid option. The 2027 Kia Sorento starts at $32,590 as a gas model, but the versions that compete with the Pathfinder on equipment sit between $38,690 and $47,990, and the hybrid opens at $39,090.

That makes this a $40,000-to-$49,000 fight between two very different answers to the same question. Nissan sells space, a 284-hp V6, eight seats, and up to 6,000 pounds of towing. Kia sells a hybrid that costs $400 more than its own gas twin, a 10-year powertrain warranty, and a smaller footprint. Prices below are MSRPs checked against Nissan's and Kia's own sites on October 21, 2026, before destination unless noted.

The short answer

Buy the Pathfinder if you fill all three rows, tow a boat or camper, or want a naturally aspirated V6 in a segment that has mostly abandoned them. Buy the Sorento Hybrid if the third row is for occasional use and you drive enough miles for a 37-mpg rating to matter; at today's gas prices it saves about $1,050 a year against the Pathfinder. The gas Sorento Turbo is the odd one out: it matches the Pathfinder's 23 mpg while giving up the V6, the eighth seat, and 4 cubic feet of cargo.

Fuel math uses the AAA national average of $4.28 for regular on October 20. Fuel-economy figures are the ones each automaker publishes; neither 2027 model is listed on fueleconomy.gov yet.

What $40,000 buys

With destination, a base Pathfinder SV with front-wheel drive is $41,565. For that you get the 3.5-liter V6, a nine-speed automatic, three rows for eight, 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row, and a 3,500-pound tow rating that the SV Premium Package pushes to 6,000 pounds. The 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto is standard across the line.

Kia offers two ways to spend the same money. A gas Sorento EX with front-wheel drive is $40,185 and comes with the 274-hp turbo four and an eight-speed dual-clutch, so on paper it gives up only 10 hp to the Nissan. A Sorento Hybrid EX, the car Kia priced on October 16, is $40,585 and swaps that turbo for a 1.6-liter hybrid rated at 37 mpg combined.

The catch with both Kias is scale. The Sorento is 8.1 inches shorter than the Pathfinder, seats seven at most, and carries 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row against Nissan's 16.6. That is the difference between a week's groceries and a stroller plus groceries. The Sorento does have more third-row legroom on paper, 29.6 inches to the Pathfinder's 28.0, so the Nissan's advantage is seats and cargo rather than stretch-out room.

Fuel: a $5,279 gap over five years

At $4.28 a gallon and 15,000 miles a year, the Pathfinder's 23-mpg rating burns about $2,790 in fuel annually. A front-drive Sorento Hybrid at 37 mpg costs about $1,735, and an all-wheel-drive hybrid at 34 mpg about $1,888. Over five years that is a $5,279 gap between the Pathfinder and the front-drive hybrid, or $4,514 against the all-wheel-drive hybrid.

Add purchase price and the hybrid's lead grows. A Sorento Hybrid EX FWD at $40,585 plus five years of fuel comes to $49,258. A Pathfinder SV FWD at $41,565 plus fuel is $55,517. The gas Sorento Turbo lands at $54,137, so against the Nissan it saves only the $1,380 difference in sticker; its 23-mpg rating is identical.

The hybrid gives up two things to get there. It tows 2,000 pounds, a third of what a properly equipped Pathfinder manages, and its six-speed automatic is paired with 232 hp, 52 fewer than the Nissan. Kia hasn't published 2027 EPA figures separately, and the ratings above are the ones on its own site.

At $48,000: Special Edition vs. X-Line SX-Prestige

The top of the overlap is where the two brands show their priorities. Nissan's 40th-anniversary Pathfinder Special Edition is $47,390 with front-wheel drive or $49,390 with 4WD, and bundles the tow hitch for 6,000 pounds, a panoramic moonroof, second-row captain's chairs, 12-speaker Bose audio, and a black-and-burgundy TailorFit cabin. The Platinum above it adds leather and ventilated seats for $2,500 more.

Kia's Sorento Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige is $47,590 with standard all-wheel drive, so it is $1,800 below the all-wheel-drive Special Edition while adding a head-up display, Bose audio, captain's chairs, and the 34-mpg hybrid powertrain. The gas X-Pro SX-Prestige at $47,990 is the closest thing Kia has to a Rock Creek: all-terrain tires, a 4,500-pound tow rating, and standard AWD. Nissan's Rock Creek 4WD is $45,390 with a 6,000-pound rating but a 21-mpg combined figure, the lowest of any trim here.

The Sorento Plug-in Hybrid is priced above this bracket at $53,890 and comes in one trim for 2027; Kia hasn't said when it reaches dealers, so we have left it out of the table.

Warranty: Kia doubles both terms

Nissan covers the Pathfinder for three years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Kia doubles both: five years or 60,000 miles basic and 10 years or 100,000 miles powertrain, with the hybrid battery matched to the longer term. For a buyer who keeps the car past year five, the Sorento comes with a safety net the Nissan doesn't offer without a paid extended contract.

Both earn a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with a caveat on the Kia: the award applies to Sorentos built after September 2025, when Kia revised the rear seat belts, so check the door-jamb build date on 2026 inventory. Neither has a 2027 IIHS listing yet, and NHTSA hasn't published overall ratings for either.

Deals and timing

The Pathfinder's 2027 pricing arrives before the cars do. Through November 2, current offer listings compiled by CarsDirect show Nissan putting up to $5,000 in customer cash on the outgoing 2026 Pathfinder, or $2,000 plus 0% financing for 60 months through NMAC. A 2027 car in November will not carry that money. For the Sorento, the same listings show 1.99% for 48 months on 2027 gas models, or $1,000 cash with 5.5% financing, and up to $3,500 cash on leftover 2026 plug-ins, all through November 2. Confirm the numbers on nissanusa.com and kia.com before signing, as regional programs differ.

Sales tell a similar story to the prices. Nissan sold 87,382 Pathfinders through September, up 20.9%, though the third quarter dipped 9.5% as Nissan pulled back from rental fleets. Kia moved 77,205 Sorentos, up 4.3%, with September alone up 37.5% as hybrid demand picked up.

Which one should you buy

If you need all eight seats, the answer is the Pathfinder, because the Sorento doesn't offer them. If you tow more than 2,000 pounds, it's the Pathfinder with a tow package, because the hybrid can't and the gas Sorento needs its own package to reach 3,500. If you want the 2027 car in a November driveway, Nissan has a date and Kia's hybrid doesn't.

For everyone else, the Sorento Hybrid EX is the better buy at $40,000. It costs $980 less with destination, saves roughly $5,000 in fuel over five years, and carries twice the warranty. You pay for that with a tighter cargo hold and one fewer seat. Families who have outgrown a compact SUV but don't need the full-size third row of a Palisade Hybrid or Grand Highlander Hybrid, which start $5,500 to $6,500 higher with destination, will find the Sorento is sized for them. Families who do need it should skip both and read that comparison instead.

We haven't driven the 2027 versions of either; this is a spec-sheet and price comparison, and we'll update it when the EPA posts official 2027 figures and the IIHS lists the 2027 model years.
