Rivian Recalls Nearly 99,000 EVs Over a Backup Camera Glitch It Already Fixed Over the Air
A screen prompt can hide the rearview image in some R1T, R1S, and R2 models. The software fix is already on more than 95% of affected vehicles.
Rivian is recalling 98,828 vehicles in the US because an on-screen prompt can briefly hide the backup camera image. The campaign covers the R1T, the R1S, and, for the first time, the new R2. Most owners already have the fix, because Rivian pushed it over the air before the recall became public.
The bug appears only in a narrow scenario. Suppose a driver has switched stability control off, then leaves the vehicle and comes back. On shifting into reverse, a safety prompt on the center screen can sit on top of the rearview image. The camera view returns once the vehicle starts moving.
That short gap is enough to miss Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, the federal rule for rear visibility, so Rivian filed the campaign as a noncompliance recall. The automaker says it is not aware of any customer reports, crashes, or injuries tied to the condition.
By model, the US count breaks down to 62,259 R1S SUVs from the 2022–2027 model years, 34,088 R1T pickups from 2022–2026, and 2,481 R2s from the 2027 model year. Canada is covered under Transport Canada campaign 2026-443. Reuters puts the total across all markets at about 100,700 vehicles.
Fixed before the letters arrive
Rivian's recall page lists the remedy as available since Sept. 23. It also says more than 95% of affected vehicles have already installed the corrected software. Owners who haven't updated only need to accept the latest over-the-air release. No service visit is required.
Federal recall procedure still requires written notice by mail to registered owners. According to reports on the filing, those letters are expected in early November, weeks after the fix reached most of the fleet.
Rivian has run into this mismatch before. In 2023, a software update disabled the defroster and defogger controls on 1,463 R1 vehicles. Rivian fixed the problem over the air and alerted owners by email, text, and app message. Its safety recall report still committed to mailed notices. Larger automakers face the same process: Volvo remedied a rearview camera recall covering 413,151 US vehicles with an over-the-air update.
A first for the R2
This is the first recall to include the R2, Rivian's lower-priced midsize SUV, which began customer deliveries in June. Rivian's recall list goes back to May 2022 and shows 23 earlier campaigns, all of them limited to the R1 models or the EDV commercial van.
