Rivian's R2 Outsells Every Other Rivian, but the Car Business Still Loses Money

The startup turns real camera footage into editable 3D driving worlds. Rivian needs those synthetic miles before Point to Point lands in December and Uber's 2028 robotaxi deadline arrives.

Invitations started October 15 for Gen 2 R1 and R2 owners in California and Florida on a paid Autonomy+ plan. Expect weekly testing, camera sharing, and 30-day safety checks.

Redwood Materials will now take Rivian’s production scrap and worn-out packs, sort them into grid storage or recycling, and keep building the 10 MWh battery farm at the Normal, Illinois plant.

Kelley Blue Book counts 266,630 EVs sold in the third quarter. Tesla still takes more than half, Toyota and Lexus nearly quintupled, and Ford and Volkswagen all but vanished.

Newer R2 Performance SUVs cool the front seats through the cushion only. Rivian blames fan noise but hasn’t said which vehicles changed or whether owners get anything back.

The over-the-air update runs through November 2 and adds light shows, lock sounds and an arcade game. Not every Rivian gets the same set.

Software update 2026.36 streams live cabin video to the Rivian app, but only for Connect+ subscribers. R1T and R1S owners get remote Pet Mode control instead.

A screen prompt can hide the rearview image in some R1T, R1S, and R2 models. The software fix is already on more than 95% of affected vehicles.

The light-shifting purple lands months ahead of its original 2027 timing, but it's a $2,000 option reserved for the priciest R2.

Software update 2026.31 moves every R1T and R1S onto the same software as the R2, and its navigation now flags police and speed cameras using reports from Google Maps and Waze users. Two new features sit behind the $14.99-a-month Connect+ plan.

Both options were on the spec sheet since March but missing from the order form. Coastal Cloud stays off the Standard trim, and Rivian still isn't quoting prices.
