Audi Says It's the First Automaker With a Fully Native Spotify App — No Phone Required

The free app runs on Android Automotive in 2026 Audis, adds music videos and live lyrics when parked, and keeps passenger-screen features on the move.

Spotify no longer needs your phone in a new Audi. Audi says it is the first automaker to offer Spotify's fully native in-car app, which runs directly on the car's Android Automotive OS infotainment system and adds music videos and real-time lyrics when the car is parked. The app went live on October 21 through the Audi Application Store.

The launch is limited to Audi's newest architectures: the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron on the electric PPE platform, plus the A5, Q5, and A6 built on the combustion-based PPC platform from the 2026 model year. Audi says the next Q7 and Q9 will get the app from their respective market launches. It is one more piece of the brand's growing in-car app and services business, which already includes Audi's paid personal Themes subscription.

What owners actually get

The app is free to download, but it needs a Spotify account, and what you pay depends on your Spotify plan, according to the Audi release. Audi adds that the app requires a data connection.

Features change with the car's state. Parked, the center MMI screen shows the full app: browsing, music videos, and synced lyrics. Once the car moves, videos, lyrics, sign-in, and settings disappear from the center screen, and the related controls drop off the Now Playing view. "Hey Audi" voice commands and Spotify's AI DJ keep working. In cars with a front passenger display, the passenger can keep watching videos and reading lyrics on the move.

Spotify Jam lets occupants join a shared listening session by scanning a QR code and adding tracks to a common queue.

How it differs from CarPlay and Android Auto

Phone projection streams a phone app through a simplified driving layout, so the music still lives on the handset. Spotify's previous in-car apps on Android Automotive took a similar route, using standardized templates. Audi says the new version, developed with Spotify and VW Group software unit Cariad, has its own interface with familiar Spotify menus, laid out for multiple screens.

Some of what it offers is not exclusive. Spotify Jam began coming to Android Auto in 2025, Android Authority reported. The real differences are video, lyrics, and no phone dependency. Audi has gone this route before: its 2022 models gained a built-in Apple Music app that also worked without a phone.

Infotainment is a sore point across the industry. Problems with it make up a quarter of all new-car complaints in J.D. Power's 2026 study, and automakers keep testing how far they can push their own software, as GM's retreat on dropping CarPlay showed.

What Audi hasn't said

The app is launching in 47 markets, including North America, but Audi hasn't given a separate US date or confirmed that every eligible US car can download it now. It also hasn't said whether the connection the app needs comes from Audi's paid data plan. On Audi USA's website, the Application Store is listed under Audi connect PLUS, which comes with a six-month trial on new 2026 models and then requires a paid subscription.

Audi doesn't list the Q4 e-tron, Q8 e-tron, or cars older than the 2026 model year among supported vehicles.
