Chevy Equinox vs. Kia Sportage: $1,090 More Gets You the Kia's 41-MPG Hybrid

Their base prices are $10 apart before freight. The difference is Kia's $32,085 hybrid, which Chevy can't match, plus a warranty twice as long.

Strip away the badges, and the entry prices of the 2027 Chevrolet Equinox and 2027 Kia Sportage are almost identical. Chevy lists the Equinox LT at $29,000 before destination; Kia lists the Sportage LX at $28,990. The real gap only shows up in the fine print — and in what the Kia offers that the Chevy doesn't.

Once each brand's destination charge is added, the cheapest Sportage costs $30,485 and the cheapest Equinox costs $30,995. That $510 difference is entirely freight: Chevrolet charges $1,995 to deliver an Equinox, while Kia charges $1,495 for a Sportage.

A cheaper segment it isn't anymore

Compact SUVs are no longer the bargain end of the showroom. Kelley Blue Book puts the segment's average transaction price at $37,722 in August, up 1.1% from a year earlier and well above subcompact SUVs ($31,149) and compact cars ($27,997), according to Cox Automotive. The segment also slipped to No. 2 in volume this year, behind midsize SUVs.

That makes these two the value floor of a segment drifting upmarket. Both start roughly $7,000 below what the average compact SUV buyer actually pays. What separates them is how much each gives you for the next few thousand dollars.

Prices are MSRP plus destination and exclude options, taxes, and dealer fees. Fuel-economy figures for the gas Sportage come from Kia's 2027 ratings as reported by Cars.com.

The hybrid question Chevy can't answer

The Sportage's most important trim isn't the cheapest one. For 2027, Kia added front-wheel drive to the Hybrid S and EX and priced the Hybrid LX FWD at $30,590 before destination, per Kia's pricing release. With destination, that's $32,085 — only $1,090 more than a base Equinox LT.

For that money, the hybrid adds 57 hp and a 41-mpg combined rating against the Equinox's 26. At AAA's national average of $4.47 a gallon on Sept. 23, 15,000 miles a year costs about $2,581 in fuel in a front-drive Equinox and about $1,637 in a front-drive Sportage Hybrid. The roughly $944 annual difference covers the price gap in about 14 months.

The gap is just as stark with all-wheel drive. A Sportage Hybrid EX AWD costs $35,385 with destination, $2,510 less than an Equinox RS or Activ AWD, and returns 35 mpg combined to the Chevy's 26.

Chevrolet has no counterpunch. The 2027 Equinox's only mechanical change is the swap from a CVT to an eight-speed automatic on front-drive models, and Chevrolet itself says FWD fuel economy dips slightly as a result. GM has not announced a hybrid Equinox. Its electrified answer is the separate Equinox EV, which GM Authority reports starts at $36,795 with destination for 2027 — a different purchase altogether now that the federal EV tax credit is gone.

Where the Equinox does fight back is torque and screen real estate. Its turbo four makes 25 lb-ft more than the gas Sportage, and every Equinox gets an 11-inch digital cluster, where the base Sportage makes do with a 4.2-inch display until you reach the SX or add an options package. Both include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Sales: the Equinox isn't sinking, the Sportage is climbing

The Equinox's first quarter looked grim: 61,398 deliveries, down 13.5% year over year. It recovered in the second quarter to 62,977, up 6.9%, leaving first-half sales at 124,375, down 4.2%, according to GM's Q2 delivery report.

The Sportage is moving the other way. Kia sold 129,713 Sportages through August, up 8.5%, across gas, hybrid, and plug-in versions. August alone brought 18,723 sales and a record month for the brand, with hybrid sales nearly doubling and the Sportage Hybrid up 40%.

Warranty and safety: Kia's paper advantage

Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty doubles GM's 5-year/60,000-mile coverage, and its basic warranty runs two years longer. The long powertrain term applies to the original owner only; it drops to five years/60,000 miles on resale, per Kia's warranty terms.

In IIHS testing, the Sportage earned a 2025 Top Safety Pick+ for 2026 models built after May 2025. The 2026 Equinox earned no award: it was rated Good in most tests but only Acceptable in the passenger-side small overlap crash, where IIHS measured higher head and lower-leg injury risk. Neither 2027 model has a new IIHS rating yet.

What we don't know yet

  • Incentives: GM is offering low-interest financing on the 2026 and 2027 Equinox through Sept. 30 but no cash discounts, according to GM Authority. October programs haven't been announced.
  • Inventory: Neither automaker publishes model-level days' supply. GM reported 510,812 vehicles in total dealer inventory at the end of June.
  • 2027 Sportage sales: Kia doesn't split sales by model year, and 2027 gas models only got pricing on Aug. 26, so it's too early to judge demand.
  • Official EPA numbers for the 2027 Equinox FWD: Chevrolet's own figure is 26 mpg combined, down from 27; we'll update when fueleconomy.gov lists it.

Which one should you buy?

If you want the cheapest possible compact SUV from these two, the gas Sportage LX wins by $510, carries a longer warranty, and holds more cargo. That alone is a clean win on paper.

But the smart money doesn't stop at the base gas model. The Sportage Hybrid LX FWD costs about $1,100 more than an Equinox LT and should earn that back in fuel in just over a year at today's gas prices. With AWD, the Sportage Hybrid is cheaper than a comparable Equinox outright.

The Equinox still makes sense for a narrow buyer: someone who values its standard digital cluster and turbo torque, or who can negotiate a leftover 2026 model with GM's low-rate financing. For everyone else, the Kia offers more car and more choice for similar money. Until Chevy puts a hybrid in the Equinox, this is a price war it's fighting with one hand.
