Lexus NX 450h+ vs. Toyota RAV4 PHEV: What You Actually Get for the Premium
Same platform, same 324 hp. The RAV4 goes farther on electricity and costs less to fuel; the 2027 Lexus counters with standard DC charging and a longer warranty.

The Lexus NX 450h+ and the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid are built on the same TNGA-K architecture, ride on the same 105.9-inch wheelbase, and now quote the same 324 hp from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and electric motors. Lexus confirmed the plug-in's new numbers this week in its U.S. spec sheet for the redesigned 2027 NX, covered in our 2027 Lexus NX guide. What it hasn't published is a price.
That leaves a sharper question than usual: when the hardware is this close, what does the Lexus premium actually pay for? We lined up the confirmed figures for both, priced five years of fuel and electricity at today's rates, and flagged everything that is still missing. The short answer is that the RAV4 now wins on range, fuel, towing, and price, while the NX wins on charging, warranty, and cabin.
What's confirmed, and what isn't
For the 2027 NX 450h+, Lexus's October 20 release gives preliminary output, a manufacturer-estimated 45 miles of electric range, its own fuel-economy estimates, and four grades: Premium, Premium+, F SPORT, and Luxury. The details are in our breakdown of the U.S. specs. Lexus says pricing will come closer to the on-sale date and expects the NX in global markets by the end of 2026.
The 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has been on sale since spring. Toyota's U.S. site lists four grades from $41,500 to $48,500 before a $1,450 destination charge, with an EPA-estimated 54 miles of electric range on the SE.

Where the Lexus earns its money
Charging. Every 2027 NX 450h+ gets DC fast charging, and the port is NACS-style, the connector most new U.S. chargers are moving to. On the RAV4 you have to buy an XSE or Woodland to get DC charging at all, and the port is CCS. Lexus hasn't said whether the NX will be cleared for Tesla Superchargers, so treat the NACS port as future-proofing rather than a confirmed network.
Warranty. The Lexus basic warranty runs a year and 14,000 miles longer than Toyota's, and powertrain coverage adds another year and 10,000 miles. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles on both.
Cabin and tech. A 14-inch touchscreen is standard on every NX grade, and Lexus says engine noise in the cabin drops 20% from the 2026 model. Luxury and F SPORT add the Sensory Concierge mood presets, Panoramic View Monitor, and Advanced Park with Remote Park. Lexus also includes five-year trials of Remote Connect, Safety Connect, and Service Connect, though Drive Connect, which runs the cloud navigation and voice assistant, comes with a three-month trial before it needs a subscription.
Where the RAV4 wins
Range and fuel. The RAV4 SE's 54 electric miles beat the NX's 45 by nine, and on gas it is rated 40 mpg combined against the Lexus's estimated 37. It also runs on regular. The current NX 450h+ calls for premium, according to Edmunds and California's DriveClean database; Lexus hasn't said whether that changes for 2027.
Utility. Toyota rates the RAV4 Plug-in to tow 3,500 pounds, against 2,000 for the 2026 NX 450h+, and Toyota Canada lists 33.6 cubic feet of cargo space against 22.7 for the 2026 NX. The two companies measure in different markets, so check the U.S. spec sheets, but the gap is large enough to matter.

Price. Even the RAV4 XSE, the grade that matches the NX's DC charging, costs $48,650 with destination. The 2026 NX 450h+ Premium is $59,205. That is a $10,555 gap on today's sticker, and it is the only Lexus price we can use until the 2027 is announced.
Five years of fuel and electricity
We priced 15,000 miles a year for five years, comparing the RAV4 XSE (40 mpg, 96 MPGe per Toyota) with the 2027 NX 450h+ (37 mpg per Lexus). Because Lexus hasn't published an MPGe estimate for the 2027, we used the 2026 450h+'s EPA rating of 84 MPGe. Gas is AAA's October 22 national average, $4.27 for regular and $5.19 for premium, and home electricity is 18.2 cents per kWh, the EIA's 2026 residential forecast.
- Charged nightly (10,000 electric miles a year): NX $7,155, RAV4 $5,864. The RAV4 saves $1,292.
- Never plugged in: NX $10,512, RAV4 $8,006. The RAV4 saves $2,505.
- If the 2027 NX accepts regular: its costs fall to $6,537 charged nightly and $8,656 unplugged, narrowing the gap to $673 and $650.
Energy, then, is a few thousand dollars at most. The real difference is the purchase price, and that number does not exist yet for the 2027. These figures leave out insurance, depreciation, and maintenance, which our five-year RAV4 cost comparison works through for the Toyota side.
Safety and recalls
Neither plug-in has NHTSA star ratings. At IIHS, the NX earns Good scores across its crash tests, but the institute notes that its updated moderate overlap result does not apply to the plug-in hybrid. The 2026 RAV4 has no IIHS award: its ratings include an Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap test, and IIHS applies them to the Hybrid without saying whether they cover the plug-in.
The RAV4 Plug-in is also under a recall for a control-unit fault that can cut drive power, now filed with NHTSA as campaign 26V-659. Dealers will update the software for free; check your VIN before buying a 2026 off the lot.
Current deals
Offers listed by Kelley Blue Book for an Ohio ZIP code, all ending November 2, show 4.99% APR for 72 months on the 2026 NX 450h+ Luxury, a $619-a-month, 36-month lease on the 2026 Premium with $4,999 due at signing, and $1,000 cash on the 2026 NX plug-in. The RAV4 Plug-in gets 4.99% for 48 months, 5.99% for 60, or 6.99% for 72, with no lease or cash offer listed. Offers vary by region, so confirm with a dealer.
Who should buy which
Buy the RAV4 Plug-in if you want the most electric miles, the lowest running costs, or the towing and cargo space. The XSE gets you DC charging for about $10,500 less than the cheapest 2026 NX plug-in, and nothing in Lexus's spec sheet changes that math.
Buy the NX 450h+ if the longer warranty, standard DC charging, and the quieter, better-equipped cabin are worth a five-figure premium to you. If you want one now, a discounted 2026 is the only option, but it lacks DC charging and is rated for 37 electric miles.
Wait for 2027 NX pricing if you have already settled on the Lexus. DC charging, the NACS port, and eight more electric miles are real gains over the 2026, and the price will decide whether the gap to the RAV4 narrows or grows.
What we don't know yet
- The 2027 NX 450h+'s MSRP and U.S. on-sale date.
- Its EPA range, mpg, and MPGe, which Lexus expects to publish closer to launch.
- Whether it still requires premium fuel, and its towing and cargo figures.
- Whether Lexus will open Tesla Superchargers to the NX.
- An official fueleconomy.gov listing for the RAV4 Plug-in, NHTSA ratings for either car, and IIHS crash results that explicitly cover either plug-in.
We'll update this comparison when Lexus announces pricing.
