Every Three-Row Hybrid SUV You Can Buy for Under $50,000, Ranked

We scored seven three-row hybrids priced at $50,000 or less with destination on price, mpg, third-row room, towing, crash tests and warranty. The cheapest one won.

Seven three-row hybrids can be bought for $50,000 or less once the destination fee is added, and the one that tops our ranking is the cheapest of them: the 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid. The scores also show its catch, which is the smallest third row in the group.

This guide, updated October 25, replaces our earlier three-way look at the Telluride, Palisade, and Grand Highlander with a full scored ranking. If you have already narrowed it to two, our Palisade Hybrid vs. Grand Highlander Hybrid cost comparison runs the five-year money math for that pair, and our Pathfinder vs. Sorento comparison sets the smaller Kia against a gas V6.

How we scored them

The entry rule is simple: a version with three rows and a full-hybrid powertrain priced at $50,000 or less including destination. Prices were checked against automaker pricing sheets and model pages on October 24 and 25, 2026. Every figure in the tables includes destination, and each vehicle is labeled with its model year, because Hyundai and Kia are selling 2027s while Toyota's minivan and Highlander are 2026s.

We scored six criteria from 1 to 10, for a maximum of 60:

  • Price: the cheapest qualifying version. The lowest gets 10, and each $1,250 above it costs a point.
  • Fuel economy: the best combined rating among versions under $50,000. 37 mpg gets 10, minus a point per mpg.
  • Third row: third-row legroom. 35 inches or more gets 10, minus a point per inch.
  • Towing: 4,500 pounds gets 10, minus a point per 500 pounds.
  • Safety: a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ that covers the model year on sale gets 10. A TSP+ held by the 2026 model, with the 2027 not yet rated, gets 9. No award with Good or Acceptable updated crash tests gets 5; no award with a Marginal result in the updated moderate-overlap test gets 3.
  • Warranty: 10 for 5-year/60,000-mile basic and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage; 6 for Toyota's 3/36 and 5/60, which comes with a longer 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery term.

All-wheel drive isn't scored, but the specs table shows what it costs and whether it fits under the cap. NHTSA isn't scored either: we couldn't confirm current-year overall ratings for most of these models, and the Telluride and Sienna are on the agency's 2027 test list, so every NHTSA cell reads TBA. Ties go to the vehicle with more third-row legroom. Fuel costs assume 15,000 miles a year for five years at AAA's October 22 national average of $4.27 for regular.

Fuel cost uses each vehicle's best qualifying rating. Hyundai prices include its $1,650 freight charge for 2027, Kia's include $1,495 (Sorento) or $1,545 (Telluride, Carnival), and Toyota's include $1,595 for the 2027 Grand Highlander and $1,495 for the 2026 Highlander. The Sienna figure is Edmunds' current listing with destination; Toyota's own 2026 pricing page wasn't available to check. Sources: Hyundai's 2027 Palisade pricing sheet and Santa Fe sheet, Kia's specification pages, Toyota's October 1 Grand Highlander announcement, and the IIHS 2026 award list.

1. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid: 48 points

The Santa Fe wins because nothing else gets close on entry price. A 2027 SE Hybrid with front-wheel drive is $38,300 with freight, $2,285 below the next-cheapest vehicle here, and all-wheel drive adds $1,800 while the combined rating drops only from 36 to 35 mpg. Hyundai's 2027 pricing includes the Limited at $49,400 with AWD, so most of the lineup fits under the cap.

The weak spots are the ones that matter in a three-row SUV. Its third row has 30.0 inches of legroom, it carries 14.6 cubic feet behind that row, and it tows 2,000 pounds. Buy it as a two-row SUV with a kids' row in the back, not as a substitute for a Palisade.

2. Kia Telluride Hybrid: 47 points

The Telluride Hybrid scores the most points of anything here outside price. It tows 4,500 pounds, the highest rating in the group, has 32.1 inches of third-row legroom and 21.3 cubic feet behind it, and is the only vehicle whose IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is listed for the 2027 model year. That award covers cars built after June 2026, so check the door-jamb build date.

Only one version fits our budget: the EX with front-wheel drive, at $48,035 with destination and 35 mpg combined. The EX AWD is $50,035, $35 over the cap, and is rated at 31 mpg.

3. Kia Sorento Hybrid: 47 points

The Sorento ties the Telluride on points and loses the tiebreak on third-row space. It has the best fuel economy in the ranking, 37 mpg combined for the EX FWD by Kia's figures, and at $40,585 with destination it is the second-cheapest entry. Kia priced the 2027 hybrid on October 15, and our 2027 Sorento Hybrid pricing breakdown lists every trim; even the X-Line SX-Prestige, at $49,085, stays under the cap.

It is also the smallest SUV here. The third row has 29.6 inches of legroom, cargo behind it is 12.6 cubic feet, and the X-Line trims seat six. Towing is 2,000 pounds.

4. Hyundai Palisade Hybrid: 46 points

The Palisade shares the Telluride's 329-hp turbocharged hybrid and its 32.1-inch third-row legroom, and it costs less: $46,210 for a Blue SEL with front-wheel drive. It seats seven or eight, and all-wheel drive fits under the cap: the SEL AWD is $48,210.

That AWD version is where it loses points. Hyundai rates the all-wheel-drive Palisade Hybrid at 30 mpg combined, against 34 for front drive, and it tows 4,000 pounds, 500 fewer than the Telluride. Its IIHS award applies to 2026 models built after November 2025; the 2027 hasn't been listed separately.

5. Toyota Sienna: 42 points

If the job is moving adults in the third row, the minivan is the honest answer. The 2026 Sienna has 38.7 inches of third-row legroom, more than any SUV here, is rated at 36 mpg with front-wheel drive and 35 with AWD, and offers AWD on the base LE. It tows 3,500 pounds.

It loses points on safety and warranty. The 2026 Sienna has no IIHS award: it scored Marginal in the updated moderate-overlap test and Poor for rear-passenger restraints in that test. Toyota hasn't priced the 2027 Sienna.

6. Kia Carnival Hybrid: 40 points

The Carnival Hybrid has the most seats here, eight as standard, a 35.6-inch third row, and Kia's long warranty for $43,035 with destination. It is the least efficient vehicle in the ranking at 32 mpg combined, tows 2,500 pounds, and has no all-wheel-drive option. Like the Sienna, it has no 2026 IIHS award after a Marginal moderate-overlap result.

7. Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: 40 points

The Grand Highlander has the roomiest third row of any SUV in this test at 33.5 inches, and Toyota estimates 34 mpg with the AWD that comes standard on the 2027 Hybrid LE. It loses its points on price and safety. The 2027 LE is $47,505 with Toyota's new $1,595 destination fee, and only one other 2027 hybrid fits under $50,000: the XLE with front-wheel drive at $48,775. The 2026 model has no IIHS award, with Acceptable scores in the small-overlap and headlight tests.

Leftover 2026 models are the cheaper way in. The 2026 Hybrid LE was priced at $46,205 with destination. The Woodland Edition, with the same hybrid, starts above our cap at $53,375.

Not scored: Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The 2026 Highlander Hybrid XLE is still on sale at $48,515 with destination, with standard AWD and a 35-mpg Toyota rating. We didn't score it because this is its last model year: Toyota's next Highlander is electric only. It also has no 2026 IIHS award after a Marginal updated moderate-overlap result.

The picks

  • Best on price: Santa Fe Hybrid SE, $38,300 with destination, or $40,100 with AWD.
  • Best on fuel: Sorento Hybrid EX FWD at 37 mpg, $8,655 in fuel over five years.
  • Best for a family with a trailer: Telluride Hybrid EX FWD, rated for 4,500 pounds. If you need AWD under $50,000, the Palisade Hybrid SEL AWD tows 4,000.
  • If we're honest: the Sienna. It has the biggest third row and AWD for well under $50,000, as long as you accept its crash-test results.

Who isn't here

The Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Volkswagen Atlas, Chevrolet Traverse, Subaru Ascent, and Buick Enclave aren't sold with hybrids. Ford's 2026 Explorer lineup lists only EcoBoost engines; Ford ended retail sales of the Explorer Hybrid and kept the powertrain for the Police Interceptor Utility. The Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and is rated at 25 mpg, so we left it out of a full-hybrid ranking.

Plug-in hybrids are a separate decision, and most are above the cap. The CX-90 PHEV starts at $52,340 with destination and the 2027 Sorento Plug-in Hybrid at $55,385. Lexus's TX starts at $58,890, and the TX 500h hybrid at $72,410, as our 2027 Lexus TX pricing story details. The one three-row plug-in under $50,000 is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, from $43,245 before destination, with 45 miles of electric range by Mitsubishi's figure.

October deals

Most current programs run through November 2, not October 31. Hyundai is offering 0% APR for 60 months with a 90-day deferred first payment on the 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid. Offer listings compiled by CarsDirect show 3.9% for 60 months on the 2027 Palisade, up to $2,300 in lease cash on the 2027 Sorento Hybrid EX FWD, and 2.9% for 48 months on the 2027 Carnival. CarsDirect lists up to $750 cash plus 3.99% on the Telluride, without saying whether hybrids qualify. Kelley Blue Book showed no current incentives on the Grand Highlander Hybrid or Sienna in an Ohio ZIP code as of October 22. Regional programs differ, so confirm before signing.

What we don't know yet

  • 2027 Sienna pricing, and Toyota's own current 2026 Sienna price. Our figure is Edmunds' listing.
  • Official EPA entries for the 2027 Sorento Hybrid and 2027 Grand Highlander Hybrid. The figures above are Kia's and Toyota's.
  • 2027 IIHS ratings for the Santa Fe, Sorento, and Palisade, and NHTSA overall ratings for the group.
  • Mazda's 2027 CX-90 lineup, which Mazda hasn't announced.
  • November incentives, expected from November 3.

Which one should you buy?

Start with the third row. If it's for kids on weekends, the Santa Fe Hybrid or Sorento Hybrid costs $5,600 to $9,700 less than the bigger SUVs at purchase, and both offer AWD for $40,100 and $42,385. If adults or teenagers ride back there every week, the choice narrows to the Telluride, Palisade, and Grand Highlander, and the Telluride's towing and 2027 safety award make it our pick, provided front-wheel drive works where you live. If it doesn't, the Palisade Hybrid SEL AWD at $48,210 is the closest match, or the Grand Highlander Hybrid LE at $47,505 if third-row room matters more than towing. Families who can live with sliding doors should look at the Sienna first.

Our hybrid battery explainer covers what the warranty differences above mean after year five. We'll recalculate the scores when 2027 Toyota prices, IIHS 2027 results, or November incentives arrive.
