The Entry-Level Luxury Car Is Disappearing. Here's What's Left Under $50,000
Porsche now starts above $80,000, Cadillac dropped the CT4, and Range Rover won't replace the Evoque. A few brands still sell a premium badge for about $45,000.

Three luxury brands sent the same signal within a few days. The cheapest Porsche you can order for 2027, the base Macan Electric, costs $82,650 with delivery. Range Rover's boss told Autocar that the Evoque and Velar won't be replaced. And Rolls-Royce now says its average buyer is 43.
Read together, those stories describe a market moving away from the buyer who used to get in through the side door. Porsche's own plan, laid out in its new strategy for the 718, a gas SUV, and a supercar, leaves a gap of at least two years with no small gas Porsche on order. The pattern is wider than one brand, but it isn't universal, and the difference matters if you have $45,000 to $60,000 to spend.
What the cheapest model costs now
We compared the cheapest new model each brand offered in the U.S. for 2024 with the cheapest you can buy now. Prices include destination. Where a 2027 price hasn't been published, we use the latest model year on sale and say so.

The table shows two different things. A few brands raised the price of the entry car. More brands simply stopped building it, and the next model up became the new floor.
Porsche: the step up is more than $20,000
For 2024, the cheapest Porsche was the gas Macan, and the 718 Cayman sat just above it. Production of the gas 718 ended in October 2025. The last gas Macan left Porsche's Leipzig plant in the summer, and dealers are selling down the remaining stock. Autoblog found leftover base models listed at about $65,400 before taxes.

Once those are gone, the base rear-drive Macan Electric is the entry Porsche, at $82,650 with Porsche's $2,350 delivery charge. That charge itself was $1,995 at the start of 2025. Porsche says a new gas and plug-in hybrid small SUV arrives in 2028, but it hasn't confirmed it for the U.S. or given a price.
The money explains part of it. Porsche builds every car in Europe, so each one sold here pays the U.S. import duty. It booked about €200 million in U.S. tariff charges in the third quarter alone, and its finance chief has already called 2027 a weaker year, as we covered in Porsche's third-quarter results.
Range Rover: the Evoque and Velar end later this decade
According to Autocar, Range Rover chief Martin Limpert said the Evoque and Velar will stay in production through 2027, but no replacement is being developed for either. The new electric Range Rover GT, due in early 2027, would then become the cheapest Range Rover. Autocar puts it at around £100,000 as an EV, and about £90,000 for the expected hybrids.

Two points matter for U.S. buyers. First, JLR hasn't issued a statement of its own; this rests on Limpert's comments to Autocar. Second, nothing changes at dealers yet. The 2026 Evoque still starts at $54,975, and the Velar at $63,175. Autocar reports that cheaper models move to the Defender and Discovery lines, including a new Defender Sport. The Discovery Sport, currently the cheapest Land Rover in America at $51,175, ends production in December, according to the same report.
Cadillac and Lincoln didn't hold the line either
The American luxury brands might have been expected to keep the door open. They haven't. Cadillac took its last CT4 orders in April and ended production in June, according to GM Authority, after dropping the XT4 in early 2025. The cheapest 2027 Cadillac you can order is the electric Optiq at $52,695.
Lincoln kept its entry model but repriced it. The 2027 Corsair, now a hybrid imported from China, starts at $48,790, with an $800 jump in the destination charge built in. We broke down where the Corsair's extra $7,310 went when Lincoln announced it.
Who is still holding the door open
Not everyone is moving up. Mercedes-Benz USA's 2027 lineup starts with the GLA 250 at $41,750 before destination, and adds a CLA 220 Hybrid at $43,900. That puts the cheapest Mercedes roughly where it was in 2024, even though the A-Class sedan left the U.S. after 2022.
BMW's 228 Gran Coupe and X1, Volvo's XC40, and the Genesis G70 also sit within a few thousand dollars of their 2024 prices. The caveats are real, though. AutoGuide calls 2027 a likely farewell year for the G70, which has lost its V6. Lexus Japan says UX production ends in February 2027, with no successor announced. And Volvo's EX30, its cheapest EV, has already left the U.S.
Mercedes is the brand to watch. Automotive News reports that it has pushed back U.S. production of the GLC to 2030, keeping its best-selling SUV exposed to import tariffs. Mercedes hasn't confirmed that publicly, and it hasn't priced the 2027 GLC, so we won't guess at it.
A younger, richer buyer at the top
At the far end of the market, the buyer is changing too. Julian Jenkins, Rolls-Royce's director of sales and brand, told Automotive News that the average Rolls customer is now 43, down from 56 before 2010, Autoblog reported. He credited models like Black Badge, Cullinan, and bespoke commissions: "Black Badge, Cullinan and also some of our bespoke creations have done that."
That isn't an entry-level story, but it points the same way. In my view, the brands are chasing buyers who want the top of the range and can pay for it, and letting the first-car buyer go.
Why this is happening
Margins come first. A small luxury car costs nearly as much to engineer and certify as a big one, but sells for far less. Tariffs sharpen that math. Cars from the EU and Japan pay a 15% U.S. duty, and UK cars pay 10% within a quota. Every Porsche and every Range Rover sold here is imported from Europe or the UK.
The wider market also gives them room. The average new vehicle sold for $50,562 in September, and the average entry-level luxury car for $60,007, according to Kelley Blue Book. Not everyone is raising prices, though. As we found in our look at who is cutting prices and why, brands cut where sales slip and hold where they don't.
What $45,000 to $60,000 still buys
There are three realistic routes if you want a premium badge in this range.
- Buy a new entry model while it lasts. The Mercedes GLA and CLA Hybrid, BMW 228 and X1, Volvo XC40, and Genesis G70 all start between about $41,000 and $45,000 with destination.
- Buy certified pre-owned. Certified sales rose 10% in September, according to Cox Automotive, and Edmunds says three-year-old vehicles averaged $32,461 in the second quarter. That kind of money buys a lot of three-year-old luxury car.
- Buy a loaded mainstream car. A top-trim Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, or Kia gives you most of the features, often with a hybrid, for less than a base luxury model.
Whichever route you take, watch the loan term. Stretching to 84 months makes a pricier car look affordable, and our comparison of 84- and 60-month loans shows what that costs.
What we don't know yet
- JLR hasn't confirmed the Evoque and Velar plans or said when U.S. sales would end.
- U.S. pricing for the Range Rover GT, Porsche's 2028 small SUV, and a new Defender Sport.
- Prices for the 2027 Mercedes CLA and GLC beyond those already announced.
- Whether Lexus will sell a U.S. replacement for the UX, and whether the G70 continues after 2027.
